A proposal to greatly improve the existing Chelsea Design Centre creating the premier interior design destination in Europe.
The Design Centre is part of the Chelsea Harbour Development constructed in the late 1980's. The Centre contains approximately 80 retail units leased to high end suppliers associated with the interior design trade. The building is currently trading on four levels, structured around three circular glass atria. Our brief was to greatly improve the existing facility by expansion and refurbishment; building on the success of the Design Centre by reinforcing its brand identity through a new build program. A new southern extension is central to the proposal. At its heart is a new atrium which is a contemporary interpretation of the successful existing atria. A scenic lift rises through the space to anchor the atrium roof and provides a focal point to draw people to the extension from the existing design centre. Externally a gently undulating cladding system will read as a homogeneous veil and wrap the development to create a unified, fresh and contemporary appearance.
